You Don’t Need to Be a “Data Person” to Start Looking at Your Marketing Data

Marketing data is not just dashboards and metrics. It includes the questions that keep arriving in DMs and email replies, reviews and testimonials, the pages people spend longest on, the social posts that get saved, and the language customers use to describe their problem on a discovery call. Reading those signals and acting on them is analysis, which is why making confident marketing decisions doesn’t require a data background.

Marketing analytics brings up a lot of feels. If it’s ever made you want to close your laptop and walk away slowly (or quickly)… you’re not alone. For many small business owners, it feels overwhelming, confusing, or just “one more thing” on the to-do list.

That’s exactly why I created the Marketing Review Room a short, live group program designed to help you make sense of your Google Analytics data, without the overwhelm. We cut through the unknowns and the confusion and focus on the practical (like what to look at), so you can finally understand what’s working in your marketing (and what’s not) and start making confident, data-led decisions. Because you don’t need to be a data expert to be effective in your marketing.

For so many small business owners and marketers I speak to, this is the stuff that makes them freeze up. Because it’s not just “analytics,” it’s spreadsheets, dashboards, tools, and terms like “bounce rate,” and “metrics” that make you feel like you missed the day they handed out the decoder ring. But in today’s world, we have access to so much information, and so many tools. It means you don’t have to be a “data person” to start making smarter, more confident marketing decisions.

If you’re creating content, talking to your customers, or running a business, you’re already working with data. You might just not be seeing it that way… yet. Let’s shift that.

Why it feels hard (and why that’s okay)

First, let’s normalise a few thoughts:

  • “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be looking at.”
  • “Google Analytics makes my brain hurt.”
  • “I feel like I should know this already…”

You’re not bad at data, you’ve just never been shown a clear, simple way in. Most of what’s out there is built for enterprise teams with analysts on tap. That’s not you. You need marketing analytics made for real humans running real businesses.

What counts as marketing data?

Let’s strip it back. “Data” isn’t just numbers or graphs. It’s insight. And insights are everywhere:

  • The questions you keep getting in your direct messages or email replies
  • Reviews or testimonials from past clients
  • Website pages that people spend the most time on
  • Social posts that get saved or shared
  • The way a potential client talks about their problem on a discovery call

All of that is data. And all of it can help you make clearer, better-informed decisions about what to say, how to say it, and who to say it to.

Simple marketing analytics tips to start using your data better

Start by listening. Look at your client feedback, comments, questions, and messages. What do people keep asking about? What do they love about working with you? What are they struggling with?

Here’s where the shift happens. Instead of trying to “do analysis,” try this:

Define your audience using what you know

Use that to map your audience psychographics, their values, beliefs, fears, and motivators. Start by really getting to know your target audience and how to best speak to them, with messaging that resonates.

Start small, but smart.

You don’t need a dashboard to get started. And you certainly don’t need to analyse everything.

  • But knowing which blog posts drive the most traffic? That can shape your next piece.
  • Knowing which email subject lines get the highest opens? That can improve your next campaign.
  • Knowing which social posts get saved most often? That’s gold for your messaging.

This is what smarter marketing looks like. It’s not louder, or busier. It’s clearer.
