Top Marketing Areas to Focus on in 2025

It’s the first week back for 2025, and I’m pumped for what this year has in store. I took some time to chill out, and spend quality time with family and friends over the festive period, and it was just the best. The downtime, as it always does, brought a lot of reflection. Reflections on lessons 2024 taught me and what the new year will bring.

When I think about 2025, there are clear trends that stand out to me, trends that both marketing specialists and small business owners need to be across. Now, these are not in any way shape or form new, but they are going to be crucial to your business, how you market your business and how you stay competitive, and connect meaningfully with your audience in 2025.

So let’s dive in. Here’s what I predict will shape the marketing landscape in 2025, and why you should focus your time in these areas.

First-party data and why it matters

With third-party cookies on their way out, collecting data directly from your audience has shifted from a nice-to-have to an absolute must in 2025. When you collect marketing insights, like email sign-ups or purchase behaviours from your own channels, you gain a more reliable, privacy-friendly view into what’s working and where to focus your marketing time, efforts and budget. Plus, it’s more privacy-compliant and enables hyper-personalised experiences that today’s consumers expect. Remember, 80% of consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that provides personalised experiences (Epsilon). I know I’m certainly more likely to purchase, or submit a lead when I’m provided with a personalised experience. This is a huge opportunity missed for your business if you’re not tapping into your first-party data this year.

If you still haven’t added Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to your website, now’s the time to do it. GA4’s server-side tracking gives you control over the information you’re colelcting so you can better understand which campaigns, channels, and messages are driving sales, leads, engagement and awareness. All the good stuff!

Turning “I think” into “I know”

In 2025, your competitive edge is going to be shifting from “I think this is working” to “I know this is working” in your marketing. Or on the flip side, “I know this isn’t working.” Marketing analytics isn’t just about tracking numbers, and information, it’s about using that information to understand what’s driving results for your business. Think about the questions you ask yourself about your marketing efforts, like “What channels are generating my highest sales, or leads?” Your data helps answer these questions, so you know where to focus your time, efforts, and money in your marketing. It’s about having clarity, and structure, and aligning your data insights to your business goals and SMART marketing objectives.

Free tools like GA4, when set up properly, offer incredible insights, but only if they’re structured to reflect your unique business goals. Think about it this way, if you don’t know what to measure, how will you know what’s working?

By leveraging marketing analytics, you’re able to move from guesswork to knowing. You’ll know which campaigns are bringing in leads, what messaging resonates with your audience, and what channels deserve more of your time, budget, and creativity. It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing it smarter.

In the highly competitive and crowded digital space, understanding your data allows you to adapt quickly, double down on what works, and stop wasting resources on what doesn’t. 2025 is the year to get your analytics set up, but start small, and make sure you have a system that gives you confidence, clarity, and results. Because “I think” won’t cut it anymore, it’s time to know. If you’re thinking, “Okay, how do I do this?” Book one of my free discovery calls and let’s chat.

Ethics in AI

Let’s talk about ethical AI for a minute. In 2025 your consumers are more aware of, and care about how you collect, store, and use their data. Trust is a vital currency in marketing. Whether you’re automating recommendations or predicting trends, make sure you keep a human-first approach. If your use of AI respects privacy and aligns with your audience’s values, you’ll foster loyalty that goes way beyond a single purchase. Why? Because trust and transparency aren’t optional in 2025, they’re the foundation for building loyalty, connection, and long-term success.

This year it’s important to prioritise transparency, fairness and ethical practices when using AI across your marketing. Whether you’re using AI to personalise customer experiences, predict trends, or streamline content creation, I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your human-first approach front and centre in your business. So, in 2025 make sure your strategies align with your consumer values and expectations. Think of trust as its own currency that builds long-term success.

The shift to the conscious consumer

Ask yourself “Do I align with my audience’s values?” Today’s consumers make purchasing decisions based on more than just price or quality, they’re looking at your values, sustainability efforts, and the impact of their purchase. Think about brands like Zero Co, Patagonia, Dove, or Aesop. Brands either known for their impact, purpose, or sustainability (or all of the above).

A 2023 Deloitte study found that 59% of Gen Z and 60% of millennial consumers will pay more for brands that align with their values. Brands that authentically demonstrate their commitment to social and environmental issues will stand out. So, make sure you’re clear and transparent about your sustainability goals and social responsibility efforts, and track your impact to back it up.

The re-imagined marketer

Gone are the days of guesswork-driven campaigns, and marketing efforts. The best marketers merge creativity with actual data and insights. When you test a new marketing idea, set up metrics to track effectiveness, and be ready to adapt when the numbers tell you a different story than you expected. Your data shows you who engages with what you create and help you refine and focus everything from messaging and targeting to channel selection.

This year, focus on balancing your creativity and ideas with data and insights. Set up test-and-learn marketing campaigns and efforts that measure the effectiveness of your creative ideas. This is exactly what I did with the Penny Campaign, and it showed me what channels reach my audience, what messaging resonated, who my audience was, and what combination of these elements drove my highest lead count.

Hyper-personalisation

Personalisation is no longer about popping a first name into your email greeting. Customers now expect the content they see to reflect their browsing history, past purchases, and even the times they’re most active. It’s about anticipating your audience’s needs before your customer (or future customer) even realises they have those needs. According to a McKinsey study, 71% of consumers expect personalisation, and 76% get frustrated when they don’t get it. If you’re aiming to stand out, look for tools that can deliver on these expectations.

If you’re just starting out, begin with your email platform. Does it allow you to segment and tag your audience so you can send tailored, targeted emails? If you’re an e-commerce brand, email platforms like Klaviyo are excellent for automating campaigns based on user behaviour, think abandoned cart reminders, personalised product recommendations, or special offers for frequent shoppers, so you deliver the right message when it matters most.

Continuous learning and experimentation

Test, test, test. I love a test! Curiosity keeps your marketing relevant, impactful, and aligned with your business goals and marketing objectives. If you’re always testing, understanding, and looking at where you can improve, it means you’re open to failure. And failure in marketing should be encouraged. I fricken love it when something doesn’t work, not because it’s flopped, but because it provides a different perspective and helps me identify what is working, so I can adapt, focus on, and further explore what’s working, and drop off what’s not working. You’ll learn infinitely faster than those who play it safe when you adopt a “test, learn, and optimise” mindset.

Brands that really stand out follow this approach, letting real insights reveal what’s working (and what isn’t), instead of winging it. Think about brands like MECCA, July, Koala, or Netflix. In a world where guesswork in marketing won’t cut it, dedicating a little time each month to experimentation, measurement, and refining your approach will make sure your marketing remains on point, ever-evolving, and impactful.

In 2025, the competitive edge isn’t about finding something shiny and new. It’s about using data and creativity together to deliver meaningful experiences. Own your data. Embrace AI responsibly. Prioritise genuine, real relationships. Remember that people and connection come first, always. When you blend these together, you’ll be set up to navigate whatever the new year throws at you.
